BMW - Swindon

The BMW plant in Swindon is responsible for manufacturing a number of parts for the famous Oxford built MINI. The works engineering department needed to up date their machinery in their woodworking workshop to improve productivity and be fully compliant with the new safetyBMW -swindon regulations. For this important investment it was imperative that the machines selected would give all the advantages of heavy cast iron construction, which they had become accustomed to with their old machines, and give all the benefits of new technology.

To satisfy this requirement John Penny Woodworking Machinery Ltd supplied two Utis planing machines and an Altendorf F45 sliding table saw, both manufactures offering the exact features required by BMW Group Plant Swindon. The Altendorf F45 was fitted with a l5 hp motor to ensure that the machine could easily cut hardwood up to the maximum depth of 175 mm with a 500 mm diameter saw blade. The main saw has powered movement for both height and angle with keypad entry and automatic cutting depth correction on tilting. With a large sliding table and 1300 mm ripping capacity the F45 is more than capable of handling any panel cutting requirement & with the world-renowned build quality of Altendorf machines the F45 will give an efficient and safe sawing centre for many years.

The Utis planing machines are now a very well known in the UK for their robustness of build, using only cast iron for the bodies and tables and combining this with up to date electronics.

MimiThe R60 thicknessing planer has a width capacity of 600 mm and depth of 300 mm and has fitted as standard an electronic table system, giving the operator dial-a-size setting for thickness. This particular machine was supplied with a l0 hp motor to cope with the heavy duty working environment, and a disposable knife system to reduce setting time for knife changing. The D52 surface planer has a width capacity of 500 mm and the table length is 2800 mm to ensure true and accurate straightening of components. All Utis surface planers are fitted with an eye level electronic readout showing the depth of cut, and quick acting bridge guard. As with the R60, the 050 planer has a disposable knife system and a heavier drive motor. To build the best quality products you need to use the best quality machines, by combining Altendorf and Utis this installation will give many years of efficient and precise production.
